Our Mission

Pioneering Computational
Behavioral Analysis

At the convergence of computational neuroscience and modern deep learning, ETHOS develops AI systems that perceive, quantify, and interpret the full spectrum of nonverbal human communication — from fleeting micro-expressions to complex postural dynamics.

Our research bridges decades of established behavioral science with state-of-the-art neural architectures, producing models that understand what words cannot express. We operate at the frontier where kinesics, proxemics, and paralinguistic signal processing meet transformer-based deep learning and multimodal perception systems.

Every system we build is grounded in peer-reviewed behavioral science methodology and validated against established taxonomies — including the Facial Action Coding System, clinical nonverbal behavior frameworks, and cross-cultural expression databases. We don't approximate human perception. We formalize it.

Research Domains

Where We Push Boundaries

Our research programs span the fundamental challenges of computational body language understanding — from the micro to the macro, from the individual to the cross-cultural.

Micro-Expression Detection & Classification

Sub-second facial action unit detection leveraging high-framerate temporal modeling and FACS-aligned taxonomies. Our systems isolate involuntary micro-expressions that escape conscious perception, classifying them across validated emotional and cognitive state categories.

Spatiotemporal Gesture Analysis

Real-time recognition and classification of dynamic gesture sequences using 3D convolutional and recurrent architectures. We model the full temporal evolution of gestural patterns — from onset through apex to retraction — across arbitrary joint configurations.

Postural Dynamics & Kinesics

Continuous body pose estimation and postural shift analysis for longitudinal behavioral pattern extraction. Our models capture weight distribution changes, torso orientation, and limb configuration states to map the full kinesic vocabulary of human posture.

Multimodal Affective Computing

Cross-modal fusion of visual, kinematic, and contextual signals for holistic emotional state inference. Our architectures synchronize heterogeneous data streams — skeletal tracking, facial geometry, and environmental context — into unified affective representations.

Cross-Cultural Nonverbal Pattern Recognition

Training culturally-aware models that account for population-level variation in nonverbal expression and interpretation. Our datasets span multiple cultural contexts, enabling systems that generalize beyond Western-centric behavioral baselines.

Proxemic & Spatial Behavior Modeling

Computational analysis of interpersonal distance, orientation, and spatial dynamics in social contexts. We model the hidden geometry of human interaction — the approach patterns, territorial signals, and spatial negotiations that govern social behavior.

Technology

Our Engineering Philosophy

We build the tools that don't exist yet. Every layer of our stack is designed for one purpose: to formalize the perception of nonverbal behavior at machine scale.

Methodology

Research-Grade
Rigor

Every model we deploy passes through a rigorous validation framework grounded in established behavioral science methodology. We hold ourselves to the standards of peer-reviewed research, not industry benchmarks.

Empirical Validation Against Peer-Reviewed Taxonomies

Every behavioral classifier is benchmarked against established scientific frameworks, including FACS, the Mehrabian model, and validated nonverbal coding systems. We don't define ground truth — we inherit it from decades of behavioral research.

Multi-Annotator Ground Truth with Inter-Rater Reliability

Training labels are produced by panels of certified behavioral analysts with measured inter-rater agreement. We discard ambiguous samples rather than force consensus, ensuring model confidence reflects genuine taxonomic clarity.

Cross-Population Generalization Testing

Models are evaluated across demographically diverse validation sets spanning multiple cultural, ethnic, and age cohorts. A model that works for one population and fails for another doesn't ship.

Adversarial Robustness Evaluation

Systematic adversarial testing probes model behavior under distribution shift, occlusion, lighting variation, and deliberately misleading inputs. Our models are hardened against the conditions that cause real-world failure.

Continuous Production Monitoring & Drift Detection

Deployed models are instrumented with statistical process control for prediction confidence, feature drift, and label distribution shift. Degradation triggers automated retraining before it affects downstream systems.

Who We Are

“We operate at the intersection of scientific rigor and engineering velocity — where every hypothesis is a model and every model is a product.”

Our team brings together researchers from computational neuroscience, computer vision, behavioral psychology, and machine learning engineering — united by the conviction that nonverbal communication represents the next frontier in human-AI interaction.

We maintain the research culture of an academic lab with the execution speed of a product team. Every member of our organization — from research scientists to infrastructure engineers — ships code that directly advances the state of the art.
